Frame of Mind Film Festival on Mental Health

Schedule : 10th to 12th October 2008

Frame Of Mind (www.frameofmind.in) is a unique, 3-day film festival on Mental Health organized by SCARF (Schizophrenia Research Foundation), an NGO in Chennai (www.scarfindia.org) in association with ICAF from 10-12 Oct (Fri-Sun) ‘08 at the South Indian Film Chamber Of Commerce.

Frame Of Mind is a part of an international conference on schizophrenia (www.icons-scarf.org) that is held every two years, attended by mental health professionals from all over the world.

The main objectives of the festival are to improve awareness about mental health and beat the stigma attached to mental disorders and to stimulate & promote interest on Mental Health issues among film makers.

These are the main aspects to Frame Of Mind, the festival…

1. 9 feature films and some short films accurately portraying mental illnesses - manifestations of disorders like Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Learning Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) - will be screened. The campaign seeks to help dispel fears and clichéd images of personalities with mental disorders. Care has been taken to screen feature films which convey a positive message.

2. Admission is free. Members are requested to send their friends / guests / families for this festival from 10th to 12th October.

3. The interesting part is a panel discussion at the end of every feature film where the audience is encouraged to ask questions about the film which was screened. A psychiatrist and a filmmaker will be present to answer the questions to help understand the nuances of the film, both medically and cinematically.

4. A competitive section seeking to counter negative, inaccurate and cliched images of people with mental illness. Students, film-makers, doctors and care-givers, among others were invited to create clean, accurate, realistic and optimistic short films (under 5 minutes) portraying mental illness, which will be seen by an eminent panel of jury who will award cash prizes to the best films.
